I remember towards the end of my pregnancies, the thing I wanted to do the most was sleep. I remember the constant tossing and turning (in between bathroom breaks), trying to make room in the bed for not only me and my husband, but the giant pregnancy pillow that I needed to sleep with every night. It was a struggle each and every night and is now a memory that I happily leave behind.
The other day I received an e-mail from Kerri Smith, CEO of a company called Belly Rest. My inbox looked like this:
Pregnant moms rapping? About maternity pillows? And red tape? What??
I opened to read a short e-mail from Kerri introducing herself as a “mompreneur who invented a maternity support pillow” during her pregnancy. Turns out that Kerri had an amazing idea – a pillow that could help pregnant women sleep at night. Not sleep better, but sleep. And anyone who has ever gone through a pregnancy can tell you that that one statement is almost as good as gold.
Turns out that while Kerri invented this pillow and was just about ready to sell it, she found out she would have to pay $4,500+ in pillow tag registration fees. You may ask, as I did, what in the world is a pillow tag registration fee? You know the tag hanging off the side of all of your pillows? The one that says”Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law”? Well, it turns out that every pillow manufacturer must pay these pillow tag registration fees each year in order to sell their pillows in certain states. Currently 15 states have these fees required and in order for Kerri to sell her pillow online, she must register in each of the 15 states, paying their stated fees ranging from $5 in Oklahoma to $720 in North Carolina. (Note that ironically New York, usually a contender for the highest fee, is only $150 and the City of Detroit has their own fee of $80).
Kerri got so mad that she wrote a rap about pillow tags. And she got together some of her pregnant friends and made a video of this rap. Yes, seriously.
If you’re a child of the 90′s, you’ll feel like you were brought back to the days of a younger Will Smith in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air as you watch.
Her video is part of a crowdfunding campaign to help cover the pillow tag fees and she’s in the home stretch of her fundraising efforts. Check out her video – whether you choose to contribute financially or not, if you’re a parent who has ever had to share a bed with a maternity pillow, you’ll at least get a good laugh.
Kerri says thanks and pregnant women everywhere will sleep better because of you!

Hi Amy,
Thank you so much for posting about my pillow tag predicament! I hit my goal a few days ago and now I can get legal to sell pillows to pregnant moms who desperately need them! Thank you! I appreciate it very much!

So happy to see that she met her goal
