The other night’s brief thunderstorms unfortunately didn’t take the heat wave with them. With today’s temperatures in the high 90’s and tomorrow/Saturday’s forecasts of “feels like” temps over 100 degrees, here are some tips to get you through until this heat wave breaks.
Stay hydrated. One of the biggest reasons people get sick during the summer is because they get dehydrated. Drink a lot of water or flavored sports drinks like Gatorade, and drink often – every 15 to 20 minutes while you are outside. Try to eat foods that are high in water content, such as frozen fruit bars and ice pops, and stay away from drinks that are high in caffeine or alcohol.
Dress for the heat. Wear light colored loose-fitting clothes to stay cool.
Go to the beach. It’s always cooler near the shore, so visit any one of Long Island’s beautiful beaches. Pack a lunch, a book and an umbrella, grab a friend and enjoy the ocean breeze. If you get hot, take a dip in the water! If you’d rather just swim, visit one of the many community pools here on Long Island – take advantage of the extended hours at many pools to help families stay cool this week. Don’t forget to bring your sunscreen.
Stay indoors. Stay home, go to the mall or the movies. If you don’t have air conditioning in your home, visit your nearest cooling center that will open early Friday. Check our Community Calendar for details on indoor events like Kids Drop In Art Workshops at Nassau County Museum of Art, Long Island Children’s Museum programs, Open Play at Once Upon A Treetop and more.
Stay safe and stay cool!
