In 2006, Danna and Brian Richardson were enjoying their lives with their daughter Alex, an adorable, smart, happy 22-month old who, right from the beginning had an uncanny way of grabbing people’s attention. Like a typical 2-year old, Alex was changing each and every day, always on the go, adding words to her vocabulary and becoming more and more adventurous and independent.
On February 4, 2006 Danna and Brian put their precious daughter to sleep after a full day of fun. Alex never woke up and to this day, the cause of her tragic death remains unknown.
As is often the case, tragedy inspires. The unexpected loss has motivated Alex’s parents to organize Alex’s Run For A Reason, a fundraising event to benefit the Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) Program in honor of their daughter. SUDC is the sudden and unexpected death of a child over the age of twelve months, which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation is conducted. Statistics show that 10 deaths per million are attributed to SUDC, with over 45 times that number being attributed to SIDS. The CJ Foundation for SIDS created the SUDC Program in September 2001 to provide a centralized resource for information, support, research and advocacy, serve families and professionals affected by the tragedy of SUDC, and promote awareness of SUDC in communities.
Since their inaugural event in October 2006 only 8 months after Alex’s death, the Richardson’s have raised almost $200,000 for the SUDC Program. Alex’s Run For A Reason enables them to keep Alex’s spirit alive and help others by celebrating Alex’s life rather than dwelling on the questions surrounding her tragic passing.
