Hopefully you were able to catch Extreme Home Makeover last night on ABC, as Ty Pennington and his team transformed a Long Island family’s home into a mini-NYC.
Over the summer, Ty and the ABC crew surprised Kathleen Lutz and her family and let them know that they would be building them a brand new house, by yelling his signature “Good Morning, Lutz Family” as he ran out onto the field at Yankee Stadium. If you aren’t familiar with the story, Kathleen’s parents couldn’t give birth to their own children, so they adopted 18 children, seven of whom have Down’s Syndrome. After her parents passed away, Kathleen and her brother Jon would not allow their family to be torn apart by putting their siblings into a group home or other institution, and the two moved into their parents’ home to raise their siblings.
In typical Long Island fashion, the makeover was done in a big way – with local companies like Allure Home Improvement and Teresa’s Family Cleaning volunteering around the clock. We hope that the Lutz family is very happy in their new home, and congratulations and thanks go out to the thousands of local volunteers who gave up their weeks to help with everything from snacks and drinks to home construction and cleaning, to help this family.
