As an adult, you know how exercise is seen – it’s extremely good for you, but there’s also that feeling of ‘ugh, I don’t have time’, lack of motivation or whatever other excuse you have (believe me, I have plenty!!). Instead of passing on that mentality to the kids, have them join in on the fun! Your children are a great reason for you to get up and move. Here are 8 fun ways to exercise with kids that will show them just how fun and exciting exercising can be. These tips are great for kids of all ages, as they get older, the level of complexity will increase, but they will still enjoy it.
Fun Ways to Exercise With Kids
Kids are typically pretty flexible and yoga can be a great work out. Mix the two together for a healthy combination! To make the yoga more approachable for children, look up different themed yoga. There’s everything out there from Star Wars yoga, to circus yoga, or barn yard yoga. Themed yoga takes regular yoga moves and just puts new names to them so kids can relate to them.
Hike or Walk
Just walking may sound boring to kids but try to jazz it up for them. Create a scavenger hunt to do. Have them check off the things they find. If they’re old enough to work a camera or the camera on your phone, encourage them to take pictures of neat things they see on their walk. You can use those pictures to create a digital scrap book, print the pictures out to hang up, or even encourage the kids to sit with you and write a quick email to a family member, telling them about their walk and send the pictures with it.
Swimming is a blast in the hot months! Jumping in the pool, splashing around, and playing games hardly seems like ‘exercise’. It’s too fun! It’s a great way to work all the muscles in the body and show them just how fun exercising really can be.
This is the same as swimming. Riding a bike is awesome! Strap on the pads and helmet and go for a nice ride together.
Silly Obstacle Course
Make an obstacle course in the backyard – have all kinds of things set up – hula hooping, jump rope, a sack race, things to jump over, and anything else you can think of. Circuit training sounds so boring when an obstacle course sounds like a blast!
Running around the yard can really work up a sweat. Try playing other games in the backyard as well. All that running and jumping will have your heart pumping and you’ll feel great that the kids are having such a great time.
Mix in exercises along with the typical ‘touch your nose’, ‘hop on one foot’ kind of instructions.
Roller Skating or Ice Skating
Go to a roller or ice skating rink – this is doing double duty because it’s a great way for the kids to be active, but instead of just going outside and playing, going to a skating rink can be treated like an awesome outing and adventure!
