Last year when we looked at the calendar, we laughed. For 2013, the first day of Hanukkah is the same day as Thanksgiving (which means that the first night of Hanukkah is actually the night BEFORE Thanksgiving). I don’t think that anyone can remember Hanukkah ever being this early before.
There are so many downsides to this. First, we do Thanksgiving every year at our house and it takes our giant Thanksgiving feast to get in the holiday frame of mind. Second, this means my shopping for the 8 nights of Hanukkah needs to be done well before the good sales and, gasp, before Black Friday?
Overall, nothing about the timing of this year’s holidays bodes well for my over-scheduled mind.
So the other day, I actually bought my first two Hanukkah gifts on Amazon.com – I saw posts about these amazing deals and scooped them up. They both happened to be for my 10 year old son, who last year was so difficult to shop for (it also doesn’t help that he is a New Year’s baby, which means the month of December is usually a big win for him with presents coming from every direction).
My son right now loves Minecraft. He plays online with friends as well as in a separate game on his iPad. Honestly, I have no idea what it is about, but he loves it. Last year, LEGO Minecraft was one of the hottest toys of the season. I actually remember looking at it and contemplating buying it on Ebay for some ridiculous price (upwards of $80, if I remember correctly). When I saw it on Amazon for $34.97, I bought it right away.
My kids both actually love Legos. Last year for his birthday, my son asked (and received) for the Lego VW Bus. If you haven’t seen this, it is totally awesome. I’ve heard of both kids and grownups buying and doing this set – the doors open, the whole inside is replicated and it even has a pop-up roof. Knowing how enamored he was with this set last year, I was pretty proud of myself for having snagged the Minecraft set so far in advance.
And then I came across the DeLorean . You know, from Back to the Future? Apparently it is a Lego set as well! On this one, the doors open and it also has fold-up wheels, time travel display, 2 license plates, Marty’s skateboard and the flux capacitor. My kids were huge fans of the movie, so this, I am sure, will go over really well. I picked one up for him and there are a few still available on Amazon for $34.99, but I’ve heard this set will be selling for a pretty penny on Ebay very soon.
If you’ve got a Lego lover, you may want to check these out. I’m hoping that Lego will come out with a great new Lego Friends set this year for my daughter….
