It’s that time of year again – are you thinking about your holiday cards? Since we have had kids, we’ve sent out photo holiday cards each year. In the pre-Facebook era (remember way back when?), holiday cards were the way that we kept up with far away friends and see how each others’ children have grown over the course of the year.
Over the past few years, we’ve leaned toward sending out a “Happy New Year” card for two reasons – first, many of the people we send cards to vary with what the celebrate and second, most years, we just can’t get it together in the holiday hustle and bustle. A few years ago, we skipped holiday cards entirely, and believe it or not, had a few “Did you cut me off your holiday card list?” inquiries! This year, I think I am a little more organized and am hoping to send out our cards (relatively) early – in a perfect world they’ll be ordered and done by the end of Thanksgiving weekend.
Our hardest task has always been getting that “perfect” picture. We have tried dressing the kids up in holiday colors and have even tried to get the dog involved, but in the end, it has historically wound up to be a very frustrating photo session, with at least one member of our family (usually a kid) in tears. We’ve since given up on perfection, and try to use a picture that we’ve taken previously that just so happened to come out holiday-card-worthy. Last year, we used a shot that we took of the kids on their first day of camp, all decked out in their pool gear and sunglasses – what better way to say Happy New Year?
Last year, we wound up doing our holiday cards online at Shutterfly, and will do the same this year for a few reasons – it’s easy, I can get everything done without leaving the house and they have a fantastic selection of holiday cards at great prices.
Here are a few of my favorites this year-
