There is never a shortage of things to do with kids on Long Island. If it is a Sunday in December, it must be time for our family’s annual visit to Gingerbread University in Riverhead. There are no entrance exams for this university. Just bring your imagination and get ready to get your hands sticky.
As soon as you open your car door, the delicious smell of gingerbread welcomes you. When you check-in, the elf asks what your holiday preference is. There are so many choices of toppings including chocolate coins, rock candy, M&Ms, gumdrops, marshmallows and more. We enjoy creating a family Chanukah gingerbread house and ironically, the blue and white frosting for decorating coordinates very nicely with our Giants fan gear.
After we sanitized our hands, we were ready to start the decorating process. I am all about being organized, so our first step was to separate the candy by type on the plate. Each of my boys, ages 13 and 8, took a frosting bag and then the real magic started to happen. Our naked gingerbread house was taking shape.
Rock candy made a beautiful three dimensional entry way near the front door, rainbow nonpareils were so festive and blue M&M’s were transformed into yummy roof tiles. I did notice a few decorations being eaten on the sneak. We rotated the house around a few times for everyone’s input and it was looking deliciously decorated!
After the final inspection, we got handi-wipes to remove the excess frosting from our fingers and it was time to get our Chanukah House wrapped up by an elf and an easy-to-transport-home box and cellophane bag. Our proudest moment was receiving our diplomas from Gingerbread University.
