When I was growing up, we had to install an extra phone line in our house so my sister and I would stop fighting over who gets to use the phone! In fact most homes with daughters as opposed to sons, needed that extra line to keep peace and harmony within the household.
I have an 11 year old and a 13 year old who have many friends between them, yet days or even weeks can go by without either of them receiving a call…a call on the house phone that is.
Sure they text, BBM and video chat via the computer, but when they need a quick answer, they never think to pick up the phone and call that friend’s home phone number! They could wait hours for a return text to a question about their homework. I try to explain that not everyone has their cell phone in reach at all times, and that actually dialing a 7 digit phone number of a friends house will most likely result in an immediate answer. The look I get in response tells it all!
I wish I could say I’m saving money on the lack of house phone use, but have you seen those family cell phone plans?
The next time your home line rings, ask one of your children to answer it – if they’re anything like mine, they could use the practice.
