It’s been a long time in the making, but the Let All The Children Play (LATCP) Accessible Park & Playground at Eisenhower Park (Field 4) will officially open the first weekend of May! Described as the “ultimate play space for children of ALL abilities”, the Long Island playground will be filled with custom playground equipment including adapted swings, a wheelchair carousel and more, complete with safety surfacing throughout. Accommodations were also made in the design process in case the parent or older adult is disabled with multiple seating areas, benches and tables. During 2012, an accessible comfort station with amenities will be added within the park gates.
The LATCP Accessible Park & Playground is aimed to help children with disabilities develop a greater level of self-confidence and feeling of acceptance, while allowing typical children to develop leadership skills and compassion. Many families have longed for a place for their kids to play in an inclusive environment, and with the support of many donors and local Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, County Executive Edward Mangano, the Nassau County Legislature and Carnell Foskey, Commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums, LATCP is able to make this park a reality.
On Saturday, May 5th, 2012 at 11am, LATCP will kick off the Inaugural Inclusive Welcome Family Fun Day – a FREE fun filled day with incredible activities for ALL children. In addition to inclusive open play playground time, LATCP will provide many special experiences including arts and crafts, inclusive soccer clinics (Hofstra University Athletic Department), inclusive cheerleading clinics (5 Star Sports and Entertainment Academy), face painting and inclusive unicycle lessons (JustOneWheel.org) – and there’s more to be announced!
On Sunday, May 6th, 2012 at 8am, LATCP will also be fielding a team for the second year in a row, to compete in the Long Island Marathon Festival of Races’ Charity Cup Challenge, a fundraising competition among local not-for-profit organizations in conjunction with the race weekend.
