Time to Play Magazine has announced their top toys for summer 2012 — if you get your children ANY of these, you are sure to be the coolest parent around. Some of the toys were surprising, some not so much, but one thing is for sure, they will be HOT, HOT, HOT and probably hard to find – if you see it, grab it!
This is not your mother’s Leap Pad. The Leap Pad Explorer looks and works much like the coveted iPad (which you may have already lost to your children if you’re anything like me) from it’s touchscreen LCD to it’s use of over 100 games and apps. What you might not expect is that the Leap Pad Explorer also has a built in camera and video, is designed for children ages 4-9 and costs under $100.
The Angry Birds app that you and your children love oh so much, is now a board game! Complete with green pigs, sling shots and angry birds, you can try your hand at knocking out all of the green pigs in taunting configurations. Best for children 5 & up, this game is for 2 to 4 players.
Let the battle begin! Beyblades Metal Fusion is the latest incarnation of these uber-popular battling tops. Kids love these super fast spinners and love fighting it out in the Beyblades arena. The manufacturer says that they are best for children 8 & up, but I know boys (and girls) who start playing with them as young as 6 years old.
Who would have thought that these Lego sets, designed specifically for girls, would be SO controversial!? Well they were; an online petition even amassed over 40,000 signatures asking for Lego to stop their manufacturing. Crazy, huh? Well, thankfully, the petition was unsuccessful and these adorable building sets are not only available, but highly sought after. Choose from over 14 adorable “settings” including “Olivia’s Tree House,” “Emma’s Splash Pool,” or “Stephanie’s Outdoor Bakery” and keep your little architecturally inclined princess busy for hours. $24.99+
How else could you make Lalaloopsy and friends more adorable than by giving them younger siblings? Retailing for around $14 and appealing to children 4 and up, this is a perfect gift for any preschooler’s end-of-the-year celebration.
This super hot toy is a mix of collectible cards, spinning tops, and other boy toys that I don’t quite understand. Appropriate for ages 4 & up, they retail at around $7.99. If your child is looking for a hobby, this just could be the start of something special.
For me, this toy was a “you have to see it to believe it” addition to the line of Bratz/Barbie-esque types of dolls for girls. One thing though – these dolls/figures are the scantily clad daughters of “famous” monsters. Characters include Frankie Stein, Clawdeen Wolf, and Draculaura just to name a few. After this year’s run of birthday parties, it is obvious that these dolls are in demand and extraordinarily hard to find.
I heard about these toys well before I had ever seen them – a terrific sign for their future. Skylander is all the rage for early adolescent boys and are comprised of a figure that attaches to a game portal. That figure then becomes part of the Skylander game that is in the console and all data from that game is collected and stored in that figure. Characters and their previous data are then fully transferable to a friend’s game console. Reality is meeting the gaming world in a very cool way via Skylander. Confused? Don’t worry – your child won’t be.
My children are very influenced by the commercials they see on television, but none so much as the one for Squishy Baff. What is Squishy Baff, you ask? Well, it is a colored powder that is poured into your bath water that then becomes gelatinous goo. Awesome you say (sarcastically)? Never fear – Squishy Baff comes complete with a goo dissolver that turns your water back into a liquid state (albeit a colored one), and then drains like any bathwater would.
Dark Knight Rises Batman
Although most children won’t even be able to see the movie because of it’s R-rating, kids are still sure to want the newly revamped Batman, Cat Woman, and Bane action figures and all the cool gadgets that come with them. The new Batmobile is sure to be the most coveted of all and is set to retail at around $32.00.
