A few months ago, I was able to post about a great program put together by AMC Movie Theaters called Sensory Friendly Films that opened up a movie environment to families with children with special needs. This program allowed families to go to the movies with their children who may have never been able to go to a movie theater before due to sensory and other issues.
On Saturday, March 23, Walt Whitman Mall will be holding a Caring Bunny event, dedicated to families who have children with special needs and providing a subdued environment to visit this year’s Bunny Photo Experience. The Caring Bunny event will provide a private photo experience for children with special needs and their families. If you are a parent of a child with special needs and haven’t been able to take your child to have their picture taken at holiday times, this is an event that is worth checking out. The visit with the Caring Bunny is free and you will have the opportunity to purchase a photo as a keepsake of the day.
During the event, many steps are taken to reduce sensory triggers, creating a more comforting environment for the children’s magical visit with the Bunny. This environment is likely to include (specific elements or aesthetics may vary):
- Turning off in-mall music for the duration of the event.
- Eliminating queue lines through the use of a numbering system whereby guests approach the set when their number is called.
- Special activities and stories geared toward the needs of the child during the “wait” period to help the child understand what activities will occur during the visit.
