Tomorrow night after your Father’s Day celebrations have come to and end and you have put the kids to bed, take some time and watch The Kids Grow Up, a documentary that will air on HBO2 at 815pm.
Doug Block, an internationally acclaimed documentary filmmaker who grew up in Port Washington, has spent most of his daughter Lucy’s life videotaping her as she grew up, capturing their father-daughter relationship on camera. When Lucy turns 17 and is one year away from going off to college, he starts to look at this aspect of parent-child separation. The Kids Grow Up is an intimate and moving account of a father’s year of learning to let go.
You will see Doug’s ups and downs including issues with his wife’s mental health, becoming a first-time grandfather as his stepson Josh and wife have a baby, and dealing with his daughter’s romantic life. The film documents Lucy’s growth from a precocious child to a serious young woman as her father comes to terms with his aging and his own childhood, illustrating how far ideas of fatherhood have shifted from generation to generation.
If you aren’t able to catch The Kids Grow Up on HBO2 or are able to see it and want to see it again, there will also be a screening at Port Washington Library on July 29 at 730pm, and Doug Block will be there.
