Things To Do on Long Island: Martin Luther King Jr. Day

With Christmas vacation just over and no snow days under our belt just yet, Monday is another day off from school, in observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  Looking for some things to do with the kids? Here are our top picks.

Many Long Island indoor playgrounds and inflatable centers have Open Play times scheduled.  Once Upon A Treetop (151 Dupont Street, Plainview) has extended hours (10am – 5pm) for kids to enjoy their little city – admission is $12/walker, $6/crawler and is free for adults.  BounceU locations (Nesconset & Oceanside) have Open Bounce sessions during the afternoon (times vary with locations) – reservations are required and spots are limited in each session.  There are so many ice skating rinks on Long Island that are open for open skate for multiple sessions throughout the day with extended hours for the holiday. For the littler kids, Gymboree Play & Music has their regular Open Play times scheduled – times vary by location.  Bubble in Babylon Village has a number of things to do on Monday, including a SNOW party with crafts, experiments and more related to snow and YOGA kids later in the afternoon.

Mesmerize your kids for a few hours while someone else entertains them!  Participate in the Harry Potter Scavenger Hunt at the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum – see if you can find the hiding Snitch and get some fizzy surprises at the Potion Table, then watch Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The Long Island Children’s Museum (11 Davis Avenue, Garden City) will teach kids ages 5 and older about Martin Luther King, Jr.  At 1pm and 3pm, honor MLK’s memory with an exciting performance by a local performing group, Aspiring Young Artists. Also at 1pm, produce a painting of peace. Vacation programs at the Mid-Island Y (45 Manetto Hill Road, Plainview) have kids grades K-6 will enjoy a day of fun activities with friends, including swim, gym and working together to make a friendship flower (10am-330pm), while 3 & 4 year olds will help create a giant friendship collage that will be on display in the hallway to celebrate children and friendship (1130am – 330pm).

Remember that in observance of the holiday, there is no sanitation or recycling pick-up on Monday, post offices are closed and there is no mail delivery.  Have a great day off!
