Do something different this year for Valentine’s Day and go see the North American river otters at Atlantis Marine World Aquarium (431 E. Main Street, Riverhead). Like a lot of humans, North American river otters are playful creatures that chase each other, jump, wrestle, slide on their bellies on snow and ice, spend lots of time grooming, and even play with a few hearts or two. Found throughout North America (but rarely on Long Island), most live not only in rivers, but also in lakes, freshwater wetlands, salt marshes, and estuaries. The otters at Atlantis live in Otter Falls, a 1,500-square-foot exhibit named for its two waterfalls – a 12-foot main waterfall that greets guests as they approach the exhibit, and a 9-foot waterfall that cascades into the otters’ pool.
Make a date to come see them daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm.
